Safety reminders and taxi's

Don't keep all your cash on you! It's always a good idea just to have enough money for the day in a zipped-up pocket together with maybe a debit card for the inevitable; if the card gets stolen, you can cancel it immediately. Keep the rest of your funds locked away in a bag and then locked in the hotel safety deposit box. Keep other valuables in there too, and always request an itemised receipt from the receptionist, especially in lower-classed establishments.

Dodgy taxi drivers appear around the world but will usually be driving around in an unlicensed taxi. In Bangkok, these unlicensed taxis are a real menace and have been known to charge exorbitant fees, relatively, stealing bags or worse. When at Bangkok Airport, always use the taxi rank out the front and make sure the driver turns his meter on. Elsewhere, only hail a taxi with a "taxi meter" sign on the roof. If you have any problems in the taxi, note the driver ID number and inform the police.

Still with Thailand, the popular tuk, tuks (three-wheelers with no sides) are good fun but inherently dangerous when cornering or when involved in any collision.

Finally, beware on any public transport or station anywhere in the world as thieves congregate around these areas. The slash and grab razor-wielding undesirables are unmerciful and will take everything you have given the slightest opportunity. Keep valuables covered!
